Conversation with an elderly Mormon missionary:

  • Him: "We believe that every religion has a piece of the truth. We never ask anyone to leave behind the truth they have when they join the church. Rather, we ask them to bring what they know so that we might add to it."
  • Five minutes later...
  • Me: "Is it a problem for you that the very existence of the God you believe in defies logic in several ways?"
  • Him: "The logic of God is higher than ours. If you were to join the church, you would have to understand that what we believe doesn't follow logic as we know it."
  • Me: "So I would have to reject the things I know to be true in order to accept the things you believe as truthful?"
  • Him: "I guess if you put it that way, yes."
  • Me: "So, to be clear, rather than build on the truth I have, I'd have to throw it out for something that does not all coincide with it."
  • Him: "I suppose you could say that."
  • Me: "Tell me again about how your church doesn't tell converts to exchange the truth they know, but add to it."
  • *Brief silence*
  • Him: "Now, that's not fair."
